UPDATE 6/4/2024: Google has toned down the prominence of AI Overviews in search results after they encountered problems with odd and incorrect answers. They’ve made over a dozen technical fixes, like reducing satirical content and user-generated info in AI summaries. For now, Google shows these Overviews only for queries where they’re confident in their accuracy and usefulness. They aim to make AI Overviews as helpful as possible by refining their appearance and timing.

Google unveiled updates to Gemini—their most advanced AI model yet—at its 2024 I/O developer conference, sparking a revolution in their tools and platforms with cutting-edge enhancements.

In what Google is now calling their “Gemini Era,” we are about to see a massive increase in the use of AI tools across Google products from Google Docs and Sheets to search and more.

How key was AI in the keynote? It was mentioned more than 120 times.

A big announcement was the full rollout of AI Overviews, which had been part of the beta testing of the Search Generative Experience (SGE).

The good news is that Google has stated that the links in AI Overviews received more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing, so showing up for AI Overviews will be a critical piece of a successful SEO strategy in 2024.

Understanding the unique functionality of AI Overviews, especially its focus on customization and interactivity, marks a clear distinction from past iterations such as Google SGE. Let’s take a closer look at how these advanced features are shaping the user experience and setting new standards for artificial intelligence applications.

Google AI Overviews Overview

How Is AI Overviews Different From Google SGE?

If you signed up for Google Search Labs last year and have had some experience with Google SGE, you’re familiar with its ability to answer questions directly, provide high-level content overviews and link to sourced information.

The leap from Google SGE to AI Overviews represents a monumental shift in AI-driven search technologies. Originally, SGE demonstrated the potential of AI in generating responses and curating related content, but AI Overviews take this a step further.

Powered by Google’s new Gemini model, this upgraded version introduces enhanced capabilities like:

  • Multi-Step Reasoning: The Gemini model can process complex queries by considering multiple factors and steps in its responses.
  • Advanced Planning: It aids in generating detailed plans for user queries, such as scheduling an itinerary or outlining a project.
  • Increased Multimodality: Gemini supports various forms of data, integrating text, images, and possibly other media to provide richer answers.
  • Deeper Customization: Users can tailor their interaction, adjusting how information is presented based on their preferences and past interactions.
  • Broader Accessibility: The model is designed to be more inclusive, improving how it understands and responds to a wide range of natural language queries.
  • Enhanced Interactivity: Allows for more engaging and dynamic interactions, inviting users to delve deeper into topics through conversational AI.

AI Overviews ushers in a new era of Google’s AI capabilities, enhancing search results with sophisticated, interactive features for a global audience.

With these advancements, understanding the SEO implications of AI Overviews is crucial for optimizing content visibility and engagement.

AI Overviews Will Reshape SEO

This begs the question for SEOs: How will this shift impact organic web performance and how should search engine optimization evolve?

When it comes to speculative matters like this, the first thing we do is turn to Google.

In a recent post by Google about AI Overviews and your website, they expressly stated “Google’s systems automatically determine which links appear. There is nothing special for creators to do to be considered [for AI Overviews] other than to follow our regular guidance for appearing in search, as covered in Google Search Essentials.”

This means that the best thing you can do with this latest upgrade to the algorithm is to focus on the basic fundamentals of SEO: helpful content, building a strong technical foundation, following Google’s spam policies and prioritizing E.E.A.T.

But, it’s likely that the public release of AI Overviews will spur a massive shift in the way people search and is going to prompt an equally important change in the way we approach SEO.

AI Overviews example

Shifting from Keyword-Driven SEO to Topical SEO

In the near future, people will start to shift from keyword-driven searches to more nuanced long-tail conversational searches.

Where in the past someone might have searched for “dog beaches LA”, they might now search something like “What are the best beaches in LA for a small family with a dog within a 45-minute drive from downtown LA?”

AI Overviews will then do the legwork to source data and curate it into a helpful overview that summarizes the various beaches in LA, show where they’re located, highlights helpful features about those beaches such as dog watering stations, proximity to dog-friendly restaurants and more.

It may seem like we’re yet again at the “death of SEO,” which seems to be a recurring rumor that gets spread every few years as Google’s algorithm evolves. But really, this change represents yet another key shift in the way we approach SEO and content creation.

A new approach to SEO in the “Gemini Era” might look something more like this: instead of targeting specific keywords based on monthly search volume and search intent, we can use the monthly search volume of a few keywords in a given category to get an idea of the volume of a given topic.

To use our previous example, if the monthly search volume around “dog-friendly beaches in LA” and other related keywords is fairly high, it might signal to us that this is a topic that has a lot of interest and potential.

We then can use this information to create multiple pages that dive into more granular content around that given topic. We might write pages about the best dog-friendly restaurants near dog-friendly beaches, or expand our existing content to highlight what dog-friendly features appear on each of these beaches.

The point is that we want to create helpful content that encompasses as much of a given topic as possible to give our websites the best chance of showing up in these new AI Overviews summaries.

According to Google, the click- through rates on the AI Overviews link cards are higher than standard web listings, so appearing in these Overviews will be more important than ever.

  • Answer Frequently Asked Questions: Address common queries found in search results and AI Overviews responses.
  • Develop Interactive Tools: Create features that boost engagement and offer personalized user experiences on your site.

Think About Real Estate, Not Rankings

Focusing on visibility across different content types is crucial in the evolving SERP landscape.

  • Recognize SERP Changes: Understand and communicate to stakeholders that new SERP results and AI Overviews occupy more space, pushing traditional listings down.
  • Diversify Content: Invest in varied content types such as videos, podcasts, and user-generated content to enhance your online presence.

Update the Metrics That Matter

To stay ahead with AI Overviews, adjusting your focus on metrics is essential.

  • Focus on AI Overviews Pattern Recognition: Measure and track patterns in Google’s AI Overviews results and optimize your content based on algorithm priorities.

  • Diversify Content Sources: Google seeks the best content for user queries, whether it’s from your website, forum comments, audio files, podcasts or infographics.
  • Create Comprehensive Content: Ensure your content answers queries thoroughly, regardless of the format or platform it appears on.

Prioritize Topics, Not Keywords

As search behavior evolves, shifting your focus from keywords to broader topics becomes crucial.

  • Embrace Conversational Searches: Recognize that users are now searching in more conversational terms, diving deeper into topics before visiting your site.
  • Create Topic-Based Content: Develop content centered on topics and user intent rather than isolated keywords.
  • De-Cannibalize Content: Balance your strategy by eliminating old, duplicate content to ensure each piece offers unique value.

Take a Fresh Look at the Conversion Experience

With increased interaction through AI Overviews, users may visit your website less frequently but still need to engage for final conversions.

  • Minimize Psychological Barriers: Overcome choice overload and lack of knowledge or interest by simplifying options and providing clear information.
  • Create Interactive Tools: Develop quizzes, calculators and other interactive features that help users find exactly what they need.
  • Design for Efficiency: Ensure your site is easy to navigate and understand

Solidify Your Technical SEO Foundation

A strong technical foundation is crucial for effective SEO.

  • Submit a Structured Sitemap: Improve the crawler’s ability to index your site with a well-organized sitemap.
  • Use Structured Data Markup: Enhance search results by leveraging structured data to provide clear, rich information to search engines.

Invest in Trustworthiness

Building trust is key to SEO success. Strengthen your site’s credibility by:

  • Prioritize E-E-A-T: Focus on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust in all your content.
  • Highlight Customer Experience: Use testimonials and reviews to showcase positive user experiences.
  • Ensure Content Quality: Make sure your content is accurate, readable, and well-sourced.
